Taking a sewing class with my Sears Kenmore Model 385 | Sew-Is-Carolyn

On the Sew-Is-Carolyn blog I intend on documenting my sewing class lessons/adventures per project. This blog is simply setting a foundation of what my blog is going to be about for the next few weeks. I'm kind of new at blogging in terms of being frequent with my entries & figuring out what it's going to be about.
So I enrolled in a sewing class because I thought that my straight stitch machine skills weren't up to par for my sewing project ambitions that I have been taking.  I took a serge machine sewing class and I own a serge but you could only go so far with a serge. I feel like the straight stitch & serge need each other so hence my sewing class.

Our first day included an introduction of the class & letting us what materials we need for the next class. We're encouraged to bring our own sewing machines and our project materials. Bringing my own sewing machine is fine with me but I the Sears Kenmore Model 385 is pretty heavy. I ordered a sewing machine bag on wheels made especially for large sized sewing machines. So I'm still waiting on that & I'll definitely review the product as soon as I have had some good use on it.

One of the items that was suggested by the instructor was our sewing machine user manual. I have to admit, I went through purchasing a pdf copy come to find out that the Sears Parts Direct website offers it for free. Okay so lesson learned on that one - if you have a Sears Kenmore Sewing machine go straight to their website. I was a bit worried about finding my manual since my machine was the same machine my grandma used while I was a kid. So doing the math, my machine is also in its 30s. But in the end I have my copy it's printed & ready for the next class. Although the salutation on the first page reads "Dear Homemaker". My have times have changed.

My project next week is to make an apron. I went to the local fabric store and bought my cotton fabric material - which we have to wash, dry & iron before next class. From what I learned from the first class, if you don't wash your fabric before you cut and sew it, the fabric tends to reshape. There are a few more things I need to purchase from the fabric store but I'll have all those available with pictures in my next blog.

Stay Tuned!

Star Trek - The Original Cast (Uhura Costume)

My Inspiration

My Final Product

For Halloween last year, Star Trek the movie was out in theatres & I really wanted to be Uhura from the Original Cast. The act of looking for this type of costume didn't turn out as easy as I hoped. So I figured "Maybe it'll be easier to make the costume myself." Mind you at this time I didn't have much sewing experience all that was fueling me was the want for this specific costume. Here's how I achieved my goal...
